Turn left, walk down the alley beneath the balcony of their home on the right, and when you turn again, you face their front door. Cookie explained that before Melina and Dimitri acquired the house, in 2001, the balcony was about to fall off onto the ground into the street. Someone pulled it into the house. She explained that when they acquired the house, she’d found it in pieces and began putting it back together. As she reassembled it, she noticed the name Isaac Rogers and said she remarked, “How insane! His notes are all in Greek, but he said he would type them up and send them to us. I can’t wait! My sister, Niki, had just returned with her family from Patmos–we planned our trips independently of each other and only discovered in May that we both had trips planned–back-to-back! Most Orthodox Christians set up an icon station, or iconostasis, in their homes, which is a designated place for family worship, where morning and evening prayers are offered, and others as well. The water was calm, and Cookie and I swam out to the islet and around the islet twice. It’s rare that the water is calm enough to swim there. Lambi was once known for the most unusual and beautiful rocks, but they are mostly gone now. Some can be seen out in the water, though with deeper water, they are harder to pick up. If you enlarge the picture, you can see some amazing ones. How in the world were they formed??? As we drove up to the gated entrance, the guard scanned our three tickets: one for Wally, one for me, and one for the car, and then he told us to get in line behind the red car, pointing to the line closest to us. As I made my way to go out the one on the right, I noticed the one in the middle was standing open outward, so I decided to go through it so I could close it on my way out. No sooner had I had the thought that I would go out the middle door so I could close it, than I felt my ankle roll and both knees and forearms hit the floor. The receptionist and a couple of other hotel staff rushed over to make sure I was okay. I thought I was more humiliated than anything and I was determined our trip would not be ruined. Aunt Calliope says Yaya chased Papouli all over the island. He said, “I don’t love you.” She said, “You will love me.” Because she was the oldest eligible sister of the Gouras family, they married. But because they didn’t have proper wedding clothes on Patmos, they took a boat to Rhodes. Papouli’s father was very sick, so he went with them so they could get married in Rhodes if he worsened. And that is why they married on Rhodes. September 28, 1933. His father died on the boat on the way back to Patmos. Papouli always said what that guy meant for evil in trying to blackmail him, God meant for good. She remembered when the family came from the United States to Patmos in 1951 and how Dad as a ten-year-old never stopped. He ran and ran, constantly getting into things. They went to the beach and a bunch of squid were in the water, and he kept running around catching them and he caught 35!!! When I ate at Vagellis in 1985 and 2011, Theologia was still cooking, and it was still a Greek tavern, specializing in Greek food.
